International Politics |
This seminar course is intended to provide you with an introduction to the field of international relations at the graduate level. We will begin with a discussion of the importance of theory and empirical testing in the social sciences. We will then examine the two dominant theoretical approaches (or what Elman and Elman call scientific research programs) to understanding international phenomena, realism and liberalism, as well as some of the prominent middle-range theories associated with them (on conflict, the democratic peace, and hegemonic/long cycle theory). After that, we will survey more recent theoretical innovations, giving particular attention to constructivism and the international society school, and the important subfields of foreign policy analysis and international political economy. We will close out the semester by comparing how political scientists and historians differ in their analyses of global politics and discussing progress in the field of international relations. It must be emphasized that this is a graduate seminar. Its success or failure depends on the quality of discussion that we generate. It is therefore essential that students attend each seminar fully prepared to discuss the assigned material.
